DHARANA ~ Focus The Mind With The Heart
The Sixth Limb of The Yoga Sutras
'ask dorothy' | Q & A
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Episode 69
~ “Focus your mind where your heart lives far more of the time.” ~
💜
Dharana, a Sanskrit word meaning concentration is the sixth limb of yoga in the Ashtanga yoga system—also called the eight-limbed path. The goal of dharana is to bind your consciousness to one particular object, activity, place, or idea.
As we explore further the sixth limb of the yoga sutras – and how specifically to apply the teachings of dharana, in this episode of ‘ask dorothy’ I would like to offer something quite extraordinary ~ to practice dharana engaging your heart wisdom.
What if you practiced the one-pointed focus of dharana of complete and deliberate concentration as you align both your heart and mind toward any of your heart’s desires ~ and to all things ~ that are most wanted?
We do this quite naturally as a function of our heart’s outpouring of desire.
If there is something important that you want that you want, you hold focus and place your attention on your desire and you also engage the physical steps needed to attain this.
Now what if you cultivated the magic and the discipline of one-pointed focus, allowing the heart’s wisdom to guide and influence what you want to manifest.
Let your mind engage with your heart’s true desire. This is how to focus the mind on only what is wanted.
Sending you great 💜 love...
Sharing the wisdom and beauty of divine love with you...
Namaste!

The 'Gift' of Love
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Episode 68
~ What do you need of yourself to gift love? ~
💜
This episode highlights my weekly WISDOM Notes ~ offerings of inspiration, guidance and love for the week ahead and for the rest of your life.
Here the focus is the how you 'gift' yourself the gift of love that fills your heart and your entire being ~ and inspires you to be loving to all beings.
What do you need to 'gift' love?
Is it patience? ...endless forgiveness?
Is it to uphold clear boundaries and to love someone from a distance?
Is your gift of love transferrable?
Is it going to be in the language that another will understand easily?
Do you need self-care to 'gift' love?
Do you need to feel peace, wholeness, generosity, connection... or the confidence in knowing that your gift of love will be more than enough?
As the true embodiment of the human spirit, it is not only at the holidays or on the commercially-driven customary gift giving 'holidates' throughout the year that we may be inspired to bring love...
True gift giving is the ability to generate love as a currency that effortlessly flows from you to each and every person that you meet ~ that you speak with ~ that you email and text.
Love is the energy ~ the solution that you fill each and every thought and word with. It then becomes incredibly easy and transparent to see.
Love is its own currency. It is the energy we hold to be honorable, kind, generous, forgiving, and trustworthy. It is a simple outpouring of who we are. 💜
:: For the Week Ahead :: Gift yourself the gift of love.
Practice this as what you have decided to be ~ to live and then gift love to every living being because whilst love is free, it is priceless and generous beyond imagine. ~ namaste ~

How to Release Anger
+ Guided Meditation
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Bonus Episode 2
~ You release anger when you find peace ~ peace that lives within you." ~
💜
'This is a meditative experience within the spiritual teachings of self-integrity, self-love, of peace and tranquility ~ of guiding yourself into the present moment and to your heart and to the sacred presence of what miracles live here.'
Anger itself is a natural emotion to the perception that we are being treated unfair or unkind, we can at times find ourselves helpless to the overwhelming feelings of anger that overtake our rational mind. Anger misdirected and uncontrolled is destructive.
Anger rises up when you perceive you are being treated unfair and unjust. When another is unkind, disrespectful and deliberately hurtful.
Anger focuses your attention onto the injustice and damage that you are witness to. As you continue to dwell in its presence, you perpetuate all of its symptoms: annoyance, irritability, frustration and rage. This is how anger becomes debilitating.
Anger is built upon the experience of hurt. It can be a defence you hold as you perceive others treating you unfairly and unkind. It can be your justifiable reaction to trauma and abuse, and to any words and actions that deny you the privileges you deserve.
Anger itself is a cue (a reminder) to re-examine a situation from a higher perspective ~ one that does not immediately cast blame and to observe your intuition if it incites that another may be unfair in their treatment of you.
There is much that you will benefit from when anger is not your first response.
The meditative practice that I guide you through here is a practice that I use. It is one that I teach. It works beautifully ~ as you hold yourself accountable to releasing anger by choice.
Anger is not meant to be an emotion that you live in. The intentions that you hold for releasing anger are most important.
Let your anger be a cue to look within ~ for honesty and understanding and for you to change the scope of what you think and how you react to all of the situations in which you hold the power to choose what is right and best for you.
The rest of what you wait for is your own. It is the peace and tranquility of your heart returning to love and to this perfect state as love and conviction. Anger is not yours to hold.

Set Yourself Free
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Bonus Episode 1
~ This is a message of healing and personal choice ~
💜
Maybe it is one of the hardest decisions - to let go of another person and a relationship that you have had all of your life.
Maybe you have deliberated this for some time, and questioned yourself about your decision to step free.
This episode follows some of the earlier content of Season Three on the topic of abuse, of trauma, and of the ways in which we can heal ourselves.
I wrote this episode as a message of healing and to offer you permission to step away; to set yourself free from those who continue to be hurtful and who have repeatedly shown you that they are not ready nor willing to change.
Whether the pattern of abuse and trauma has occurred in your family of origin, or if it has existed in a workplace environment ~ and if you have felt trapped and unable to break free, let this episode offer you the permission in which to free yourself ~ and to stand strong on your own ground of what you know is right and best for you.
Remember that you need to choose this because others have chosen to continue in their abusive and harmful words and actions.
There is no blame, only acceptance and permission ~ to live in peace.
I hope that my words here will help you ~ empower you ~ liberate you to live free.
Namaste! 💜

Waiting to Exhale ~ PRANAYAMA
'ask dorothy' | Q & A
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Episode 64
~ Pranayama breathing guides us into the ease of pure existence. ~
💜
Do you ever catch yourself holding your breath? Perhaps in anticipation, in anxiety, in the realization that something is not going as you had hoped?
Maybe your hold your breath when you think about what magic lives in store for you and your future - like when you daydream and wish and manifest your heartfelt desires?
Pranayama is a Sanskrit word formed by two words. Prana means a subtle life-force / ‘vital energy’ / ‘breath of life’ which gives energy to the mind and body (it is also translated as the substance of the astral world) and ayama which signifies the voluntary effort to expand, lengthen and direct life-force or prana.
Pranayama, therefore, means “extension of life force.”
Waiting to exhale is the other side of waiting to enjoy life’s precious moments because you are focused in the end goal rather than the entire journey and what more you seek and learn from the total sum of your experiences.
The lessons are the magic. They are the ways in which life avails to us the importance of our path ~ of the miracles that continue ceaselessly all around us and in all moments and with our conviction.
What are you waiting for?
What are you wishing to change or have or be that seems far reaching and yet perfect for you to discover and experience now? The perfect basis of your beautiful nature lives inside of you. To seek and know it is the essence of life in its truest form.
Sending you great 💜 love...

PRANAYAMA ~ Extension of Life Force ~
The Fourth Limb of The Yoga Sutras Part 1/2
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Episode 63
~ Pranayama breathing guides us into the ease of pure existence. ~
💜
Pranayama is a Sanskrit word formed by two words. Prana means a subtle life-force / ‘vital energy’ / ‘breath of life’ which gives energy to the mind and body (it is also translated as the substance of the astral world) and ayama which signifies the voluntary effort to expand, lengthen and direct life-force or prana.
Pranayama, therefore, means “extension of life force.”
Pranayama is essentially a process by which prana is controlled by regulating the breathing voluntarily. It involves a temporary pause or interval in the movement of breath.
The practice of pranayama according to the sutras helps in transforming the total personality by clearing mental obstructions, purifying the subtle channels (nadis) with prana flow, awakening dormant vital forces in the body, focusing attention, developing concentration and improving overall health and vitality.
Pranayama aims primarily at controlling the mind and suspending the mental activity and ego-consciousness in order to bring about a still mind. When the mind still and the breathing calm, the inner light of the true self shines radiantly.
The light of the self is always pure even though it is affected by the filters of the mind. When the filters (belief systems, mindset, thought, biases) are removed – as it is a state of pure awareness – there is only one pure light ~ the true self.
Join me for this beautiful exploration of the fourth limb of the Yoga Sutras ~ PRANAYAMA.

'ask dorothy' | Q & A
Self-Study IS Liberation
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Episode 56
~ "gnōthi seauton" ~ Know Thyself ~
💜
In this episode of ‘ask dorothy’ I answer the question: What are the characteristics and traits of those who self-actualize and who live in liberation and the freedom to be all that they can and more?
If you are here and listening, this is for you.
We live in a society and a world in which we are taught to look outside of our self for answers, for authority, for validation, for friendship, for community; for the ideals that we are taught to strive for and the timeline for accomplishing what is deemed acceptable.
Nowhere is our heart more certain than when we have found another who loves and adores us.
The gaze is always external. Even when we are asked to know ourselves, we still compare what we see with what we perceive to be the inspired ideal.
Self-actualization can be misrepresented. We may have an idea and an image of what it means to experience a state of being in which we have arrived. We are here. We are complete.
Self-actualized people have an acceptance of who they are, including what I call ‘the ego mind’ ~ the human construct that at times pulls us in to the limited ways in which we think and act and which create our suffering.
When you are self-actualized you experience a drive to be creative in all aspects of your life. This is in fact how you thrive.

SVADHYAYA ~ Self-Study ~
The Niyamas Series: 4 of 5
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Episode 55
~ The world gives you what you see. ~
💜
In this week’s episode we dive into the discipline of self-study and why this is necessary for self-fulfillment, epic growth, and personal freedom.
Here I share the steps for self-study and the ways in which we can experience our perceptions to invite us deeper into ourselves with love and grace and appreciation and for learning how capable we are.
The Sanskrit word for this is svadhyaya. Sanskrit is the world’s oldest language and it is the ancient and the classic language of India.
'Self-study' or Svadhyaya refers to knowing our true identity as divine consciousness. Think of it like this: This means that you already are ‘good enough’ capable, and perfect as you are.
Svadhyaya is the fourth of 5 Niyamas or observances that originate in the ancient text of the Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali.
The Yoga Sutras or ‘threads’ (as this word translates from Sanskrit) are a collection of 196 short verses that serve as a guide to attain wisdom and self-realization on how to live in order to advance along a spiritual path towards enlightenment.
Beyond the postures of yoga, the scripture of the yoga sutras provides the disciplines and observances that guide you in a practical and sacred methodology – to bring greater understanding to your life experiences and the guidance for taking ownership of your life, directing it towards the fulfillment that you seek.
In this episode I cite and also quote directly from Deborah Adele’s book: . From my research and study of the Yamas and the Niyamas, I’ve found Deborah’s book to be thoroughly enjoyable to read and I love how she has woven personal stories and other wisdom teachings throughout. I will leave a link here for how you can get a copy.
The yogis teach that we, as human beings, are at our core ~ divine consciousness.
Around this pure consciousness we have been impacted by our varied experiences, our conditioning, and our belief systems. This changes the way in which we see and identify ourselves, what we believe to be true, our preferences and dislikes, and our fears ~ and imagination.
If you think about the various layers that we hold ~ each informed by country, culture, gender, family history, the groups we belong to, and our personal experiences, it becomes difficult to remember who we truly are.
Who you are is the god consciousness. You don’t need to pray to a god outside of you. You simply need to be your god consciousness far more of the time ~ to live this ~ and to realize how incredible you are as your goodness.
The yogis tell us that we suffer because we forget who we are. We forget that we are really the divine.
Svadhyaya or self-study is about knowing our true identity and understanding the experiences that have shaped us. We find clues to this by watching our projections, tracing our reactions back to a belief we hold, and by courageously looking at life as it is.
This process of knowing ourselves creates a path to freedom. The ability to shift the way in which we identify ourselves from our ego to being a witness, and finally to our true identity as the divine itself is what svadhyaya – calls the joy of self-study.
I close out the episode with the practical ways to embrace the teaching of Svadhyaya. Please join me!
Please consider a practice of self-study. Leave a note for me here! Share with me what you are learning in your devotion inward.

TAPAS ~ Self-Discipline ~
The Niyamas Series: 3 of 5
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Episode 53
~ "If we choose to walk into the fire, it is perhaps the greatest gift life could offer us." ~
💜
Welcome to the third episode in this series on the Niyamas. Niyama is a Sanskrit word that translates as “rules, guidelines, or observances.” Niyamas appear in Hindu and Buddhist texts, and they are best known as the second limb of the eight limbs of yoga, as described in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.
These eight steps act as guidelines for how to live a meaningful and purposeful life. They serve as a prescription for moral and ethical conduct and principles; they direct attention toward one’s health; and they help us to acknowledge the spiritual aspects of our nature.
The Niyamas are an invitation into a radical exploration of possibility. Just how good can you feel? How joyful can your life be? Can you reveal just how amazing you are?
My hope in sharing each of the five niyamas – is to open you further to the spiritual life that you can live in the physical ~ and the absolute beauty and wonder that you may cultivate readily for yourself.
In this episode I cite and also quote directly from Deborah Adele’s book: The Yamas and Niyamas. Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Practice in addition to other sources that I will list in the description. They if you wish to continue your study.
Tapas - or self-discipline, austerity, perseverance, burning enthusiasm ~ describes a spirit of ‘fierce grace’.
In Tapas we employ physical and mental conditioning to push against the natural resistance our body and mind present. This resistance is what generates your inner fire.
The literal definition of tapas is “heat” – and in this case it is the heat that builds during periods of determined effort. Tapas accompanies any discipline that is willingly and gladly accepted in order to bring about a change of some kind—whether it be improved health, a new habit, better concentration, or a different direction in life.
Tapas is a process of burning through untruths, fears, discomfort, pain, and struggle ~ channelling the fire of that experience into self-disciplined actions that fuel your evolution.
Tapas focuses energy, creates fervour, and increases strength and confidence.
For example, the practice of asanas in yoga is a form of tapas for the body; meditation is a tapas that purifies and focuses the mind.
Tapas is the encouragement to tap into your inner fire as what you draw from ~ as discipline to transform yourself into something else.
I also invite to check out my 5-part series on the Yamas next. These are moral disciplines that transcend all world religions as guiding us to live of our light and our highest self. I will leave links for this series in the description.
Please consider how you can live with greater self-discipline. Allow your discipline to guide you into the fire of fierce grace. Leave a note for me here! Share with me the discipline that you invite into your life.
Sending you great 💜 love...

ASTEYA ~ Non-stealing ~
The Yamas Series: 3 of 5
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Episode 43
~ If you have everything and if you have the ability to have everything, you will never be in need. ~
💜
Welcome to this episode and the third of a five-part series on the yamas. Yamas are the first limb of yoga in the Ashtanga yoga system.
The literal translation of the word Yama in Sanskrit is “restraint”. Religious texts of Hinduism and Jainism outline five yamas.
In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, asteya is described as the emptiness that is caused by a deep loss, unfulfilled desire, and the resulting lack or insecurity, jealousy or resentment that we focus on rather than looking inward ~ which always guides us to what we can and still need to do to support our well being; and to feel fulfilled, content, peaceful, and joyful.
According to the teachings in the Yoga Sutra (2.37), when we perfect the principle of asteya, riches comes to us. Although material wealth may unexpectedly appear when we need it, true spiritual wealth comes when we’re complete and whole within ourselves.
We don’t need to envy or take from others – whether in their time, their energy, or to seek attention and approval in order to feel good about ourselves.
We can rest in the unconditional love and wisdom that resides within us and experience the wholeness of our true self.
From this sense of inner fulfillment, we naturally want to give to others rather than to take from them.

'ask dorothy'
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Episode 42
~ Truth will lead you out of darkness because it is in illuminating ‘what is’ that you then may in the very next moment, find your path again and into the light. ~
💜
This episode picks up where we left on last in our discussion of the five Yamas – moral disciplines that are recorded in the ancient philosophical texts of the Yoga Sutras and here I dive into some ‘Q and A’ on the topic of truth.
Truthfulness or ‘Satya’ is the second yama or limb of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and this moral vow holds many secrets for how we can free ourselves from our suffering.
There are many ways that truth finds you. As much as some may avoid truth’s yearnings you can never avoid or deny its huge revelations.
I’m going to let you in on a huge secret to what will always bring joy into your life and for what will always reassure you – to live honourably – to feel supported in your decisions – and to always guide you along a right path.
Satya the Sanskrit word for truth is the definitive ground. It is what supports and upholds all of your faithful decisions. It is truth that compels you to seek change and to honour what you stand for and believe in.
Truth is how you create relations and connection and how you show yourself to be trustworthy and reliable. You need to know ‘what is’ true with accuracy and factual information in order to make the right and best decisions.
Truth is not always easy. It is not always what you want to hear or know especially if what is desired is something different. Let me say here that the truth will always be what you need to know.
You can work with truth. You can find your way to your right answers when you have the correct and accurate information.
Making a decision of any importance needs to rest upon knowing the truth.

What is your path of joy? How is joy your inspiration; leading you on your journey through life? Where in your physical being do you feel joy? How does joy reveal itself to you?
For my client Sarah, joy became a desired longing and a precious gift the longer that she remained out of joy.
In our session, Sarah reminded herself of her path of joy – of how it felt as the energy of lightness and ease and of the happiness.
Joy is experienced in the simple and deliberate expressions of gratitude and abundance. Joy is always with you. It is easily accessible as you acknowledge its existence and as you hold a place in your heart for its infinite love in the present moment ~ and in your pure witnessing of it.
The beauty of joy is that it acts as a road map for the expression of happiness and the inner fulfillment that honors your heart in light of your moment by moment choices.
Sarah would need to be wholly honest with herself to reclaim her path of joy. You need to do the same. We all do. Joy is easily accessible. It is the acknowledgement of all that you are in appreciation of, and the kindness you hold in your thoughts and words for yourself and others.
Joy lived in Sarah’s expression of honesty and acknowledgement of what she needed to be happy.
Could you live in your expression of self-honesty? Could you follow what is truly your right path, moment by moment?
*My client’s name has been changed to maintain confidentiality.
Each Tuesday at 8pm EST, I take you on a journey - inside - what happens in a session of Life Coaching and Therapy in the 'ask dorothy' series as we answer the questions that honor your path and your life.

There can be a place for forgiveness in your heart for the unkind and hurtful actions given by another; for any damaging and abusive behavior together with the harmful messages that have caused you to hold doubt and a lack of confidence in yourself and of your abilities ~ and for what has evoked within you ~ to question what you know is true and best for your life.
I want you to know that you can find a place for forgiveness in your heart and throughout your being - that leads you out of the sadness and suffering you have felt and into freedom: freedom that releases the hurts of the past, freedom that liberates you into the moments of now ~ and no longer mired in thoughts that ruminate on the extent of the damage that has been caused to you.
"You break the cycle when you liberate yourself from needing to make another person see the truth of their actions and to change, you free yourself to heal, to refocus on your life, and you are able to release your suffering.
You are not responsible for fixing another person nor a relationship.
You cannot change the past.
You must simply make a decision as to what kind of relationship this is realistically able to be based on all that you have been observing ~ of the other person, and yourself."
You may be wondering how forgiveness is a solution; how will it change any of the replete demonstrations of someone’s unkindness, dishonesty, and disrespect ~ or worse - the inconceivable acts of rage and violence from one human being to another.
Something that I want you to keep in mind as we go through this episode is the fact that people who are hurting, hurt others.
As humans, we repeat the cycle of dishonor, disrespect, aggression, and abuse in its many forms as learned behaviors and for as long as we remain unaware of and/or if we refuse to look at these actions with honesty and reverence.
If you would like my help in your journey of forgiveness and healing, please reach out to me. namaste! 🙏
