Waiting to Exhale ~ PRANAYAMA
'ask dorothy' | Q & A
The WISDOM podcast Season 3 Episode 64
~ Pranayama breathing guides us into the ease of pure existence. ~
💜
Do you ever catch yourself holding your breath? Perhaps in anticipation, in anxiety, in the realization that something is not going as you had hoped?
Maybe your hold your breath when you think about what magic lives in store for you and your future - like when you daydream and wish and manifest your heartfelt desires?
Pranayama is a Sanskrit word formed by two words. Prana means a subtle life-force / ‘vital energy’ / ‘breath of life’ which gives energy to the mind and body (it is also translated as the substance of the astral world) and ayama which signifies the voluntary effort to expand, lengthen and direct life-force or prana.
Pranayama, therefore, means “extension of life force.”
Waiting to exhale is the other side of waiting to enjoy life’s precious moments because you are focused in the end goal rather than the entire journey and what more you seek and learn from the total sum of your experiences.
The lessons are the magic. They are the ways in which life avails to us the importance of our path ~ of the miracles that continue ceaselessly all around us and in all moments and with our conviction.
What are you waiting for?
What are you wishing to change or have or be that seems far reaching and yet perfect for you to discover and experience now? The perfect basis of your beautiful nature lives inside of you. To seek and know it is the essence of life in its truest form.
Sending you great 💜 love...

There can be a place for forgiveness in your heart for the unkind and hurtful actions given by another; for any damaging and abusive behavior together with the harmful messages that have caused you to hold doubt and a lack of confidence in yourself and of your abilities ~ and for what has evoked within you ~ to question what you know is true and best for your life.
I want you to know that you can find a place for forgiveness in your heart and throughout your being - that leads you out of the sadness and suffering you have felt and into freedom: freedom that releases the hurts of the past, freedom that liberates you into the moments of now ~ and no longer mired in thoughts that ruminate on the extent of the damage that has been caused to you.
"You break the cycle when you liberate yourself from needing to make another person see the truth of their actions and to change, you free yourself to heal, to refocus on your life, and you are able to release your suffering.
You are not responsible for fixing another person nor a relationship.
You cannot change the past.
You must simply make a decision as to what kind of relationship this is realistically able to be based on all that you have been observing ~ of the other person, and yourself."
You may be wondering how forgiveness is a solution; how will it change any of the replete demonstrations of someone’s unkindness, dishonesty, and disrespect ~ or worse - the inconceivable acts of rage and violence from one human being to another.
Something that I want you to keep in mind as we go through this episode is the fact that people who are hurting, hurt others.
As humans, we repeat the cycle of dishonor, disrespect, aggression, and abuse in its many forms as learned behaviors and for as long as we remain unaware of and/or if we refuse to look at these actions with honesty and reverence.

The WISDOM podcast S2 Bonus Episode 3
Here I offer the ways in which to think about presence during meditation and how to live in a state of presence in the moments of your life.
Presence teaches you how to willfully enjoy life’s moments, how to allow them in; to accept what they have to offer; to flourish in the experience of them, and to trust that everything by means of each singular moment is meaningful; each moment is significant.
When you practice presence, you become attuned to what is around you. You become more aware of the inward dwelling space of your inner being; and what allows you to witness yourself – your true nature – as the purest aspect of what you are.
Try this simple practice of presence for a moment with me. Close your eyes. Focus on your breathing. Soften into what you feel. Notice your heartbeat beneath the hand that you gently hold unto your heart center.
Presence is about joining in the moments of your life as they are already unfolding; and riding the wave of each moment; being one with them.
It is in this way that the practice of presence opens you. It draws you into the richness of the life you are living; and for seeing and experiencing more.
Sending you great love....

What's Beneath Your Anger?| A Real Life Client Story
The WISDOM podcast Season 2 Episode 81
A recent session with my client Hayley illuminated what we have all experienced; and what surfaced during our time together was the simplicity of what you can do to help yourself in situations where you feel an unwanted and uncomfortable emotion. In Hayley’s case, she identified it as agitation, irritation, and a growing feeling of anger.
I dove right in to the question: What’s beneath the anger? Hayley laughed and replied, “Good question!”
Sometimes we just need to stop for a moment and do a deep dive into our self. Our focus can be on getting through something or pushing past an emotion and we may not realize how important it is to stop and acknowledge our feelings. Hayley knew immediately why she was feeling unnerved and – her words: “unraveled”.
The name of my client has been changed to maintain confidentiality. Her story is real.

- If you have ever wondered what a session of therapy could do, this episode is for you. -
How does one identify, effectively all of the ways that therapy can be of help? How do we do this without embracing the experience itself when the idea of talking with someone can be overwhelming for some who don’t know where to begin, or how it can truly help?
TRUTH SERUM: In the past, the stigma associated with mental health has been a deterrent to seeking therapy.
What we are witnessing now, in this turbulent time of ongoing change and uncertainty, and with millions of people all over the world, experiencing more alone time and isolation than in any other time during their life, the effects of prolonged stress and the lack of support of mental health strategies and skills needed to live a healthy and productive and happy life; make it important to have the best therapeutic practices that are accessible by all people and in all languages and as much as possible - affordable and or free.
REAL CLIENT STORIES: When my client (who was), diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 18, some 20 years later; is in a spell of low affect; when her cognitive ability is challenged; simple processing tasks are impeded.
It is more difficult for her to make decisions for example, and to feel motivated to complete daily tasks.
Her usual upbeat and larger than life personality becomes submersed in what is now a quiet and somber, depressed version of herself; one that lacks confidence, and is often tormented by thoughts of ‘being a burden’ to her loved ones.
Her words to me in these moments as well as when she is feeling ‘like herself’ and happy again, are substantial to us all. She reaffirms the simple truth: ‘Your mental health means everything’. She is right.
A-HA MOMENTS: Therapy is far more than talking about a traumatic childhood event and reliving its scaring impact.
In fact, the way that it helps best to deconstruct a past event or trauma is to examine it from an enlightened perspective; to understand the situation and the context in a way that allows for healing, forgiveness, acceptance, peace – and the idea that whatever happened, and for whatever was done “to you”, there are always going to be two positive outcomes that we will arrive at together.
(1) The first is a more accurate comprehension and understanding of the situation and the new insights and discoveries that arise out of a search for greater meaning and from that, the ability to come to acceptance. Acceptance does not mean agreement with what has happened, but rather the willingness to acknowledge what has already occurred.
This allows you to psychologically move into a place of action; of rendering what will be the action that you need to take whether as an approach to how you think or what physical actions will help support you best.
(2) Second, healing occurs when you hold acceptance of ‘what is’; emotional, psychological, cognitive, spiritual, and often physical in the relief of symptoms that were once related to the situation of the past and your perspective of it. This healing is the return to your wholeness that you; that we all - are inherently seeking.
PRACTICAL WISDOM: Even after the majority of healing has been completed, therapy can continue to be a place where one experiences growth in other areas of one’s life; and hence the ripple effect of what it means to learn and discover more (about one’s self, including the different choices one may choose with greater understanding and perspective).
As a side note, it’s not about making excuses for someone’s behavior, or disavowing your feelings and how you have been impacted by a situation or another.
Rather, examining the past from the vantage point of a different perspective that I or another therapist can help with, brings new insight and awareness that allows for healing and to alleviate some or all of the pain and suffering that one may have been holding onto.

When Self-Soothing Becomes an Addiction
The WISDOM Podcast Season 1 Episode 3
TIMESTAMPS:
Podcast Intro: 0-1:32 | The Origins of Self-Soothing: 1:33 | What Do You Do to Self-Soothe? 4:46 | Self-Soothing as Self-Care and Self-Love: 5:36 | Habit Forming Activities that Soothe Children: 9:43 | Self-Soothing As A Coping Mechanism: 11:40 | The Power of Self-Soothing: 12:37 | Three Natural Sources of Self-Soothing: 20:13 | How to Live in Homeostatic Balance Using Your Breath: 23:41
From infancy, each of us has a natural inclination to self-soothe. Self soothing is a way of relaxing our central nervous system ~ of calming the body and mind ~ of experiencing relief and the absence of whatever stress we may be facing.
We experience self-soothing from our caregivers as touch, as love, as food and sustenance, and as a comfortable and safe environment. For example having the comfort of our favourite toys or blanket always available, a means of exploring our surroundings safely; and to feel secure knowing that our needs are always taken care of. Parents who are sensitive and attentive to their child's needs, and who also encourage their child to soothe themselves in healthy ways; foster these important abilities - of self-nourishment and self-care, learned from an early age.
As a child we instinctively look to calm our self in moments when we feel anxious, scared, angry, or sad. Learning to self-soothe is vital for healthy development and it is an important skill for nurturing emotional and physical well-being.
The ritual of self-soothing continues throughout life. How we are comforted and soothed as a child influences the habits that we adopt to soothe our self as adults. We often don't consider self-soothing as a strategy for feeling comfort, ease, and relief each time we feel anxiety, fear, sadness or any other unpleasant state; and yet it is perhaps the most important means of feeling better.
We may not make the direct connection between what we or our caregivers did to comfort and soothe our self in childhood, and what we continue to do today to alleviate tension, anxiety, fear; and to calm ourselves, to feel better, to escape momentarily from our life and to recover after uncomfortable, unpleasant, or threatening situations (usually situations where we have a lack of control, where there is conflict, or unrelenting stress; and in some cases - trauma).
Self-soothing tendencies can be a healthy form of self-regulation and a means of creating optimal balance between mind and body; if we choose behaviours that are helpful and healthy.
What do you do to self-soothe?
Consider for a moment what you instinctively do to make yourself feel better? to escape? to reward yourself? to cope when feeling pressure and stress? to unwind and relax?
The power of self-soothing lies in your ability to recognize the importance of being self-aware (mindful) of your needs at any given moment. When you are out of touch with, or not attending to your basic fundamental needs; or if you do what you've always done to self-soothe rather than take notice of what you truly need; and how you might best give this to yourself, you will likely resort to the well-learned strategies that are already in place; most of which originated out of what you were taught and perhaps what you developed out of necessity in order to evoke feeling a way that is desirable for you.
Three of the most readily available and natural sources of feeling 'in balance' and 'in control' as productive and healthy means of self-soothing are: exercise, sleep, and meditation (which can also include prayer).
As a special gift and practice, I invite you to experience this 15-Minute Meditation of focused awareness on your breath; and as a means of soothing self-regulation. Meditation also helps by modifying the brain's activity to achieve calmness, naturally. Consider this as a new skill that you develop with practice and patience; and as a helpful way to self-soothe- naturally.
Practical and Healthy Solutions for Self-Soothing:
a 15 Minute Meditation for Self-Soothing
Choosing to live in a state of optimal homeostatic balance helps bring to light the fact that self-soothing is a necessary and important life practice. Most ideal methods are quite simple and require very minimal effort to practice readily. You can begin to implement helpful self-soothing strategies as you learn how to be mindful; and by practising conscious awareness of how you feel and what you are in need of in any given moment.
One of the simplest and most powerful ways to self-soothe is to rely on your breath as a means of feeling calm and returning your attention to the present moment. In the present moment you can best assess how you feel and what your needs are; in the present moment there can never be anxiety, fear, or sadness because in the present you are simply being.

Instantly Access Instacalm Rx: A Meditation for Self-Soothing
Use your breath as a natural method of experiencing self-awareness. As you become experienced with conscious (mindful) breathing (as one simple yet helpful strategy), you begin to see that deliberate conscious breathing is a powerful means of helping you reestablish focus, of calming your body and mind, and for feeling soothed.
The enhanced awareness you experience from conscious breathing will also help you identify what you need in any given moment; so that you are able to provide this for yourself. Most of us need only the simplest of things when we feel stressed, worried, angered, or any other unwanted emotion. Any of your unhealthy choices are the automatic habits and unconscious actions that you had previously learned; and which have never truly been the right solution for feeling authentic happiness.
"Your breath is the connection between mind and body and it is also a way for you to cultivate a connection with and to experience the Divine (what we call God, Allah, Source, Universal Consciousness)." - dorothy
I'd also like to share with you the science of why taking a deep breath feels so good; and the many health benefits of making this a conscious practice in your daily life.
