A Sanskrit word that describes -the need for living without attachments- does not mean that we cannot value and appreciate all of the luxuries we have.
The moral discipline of Aparigraha ~ is to not be entrenched in a dependency to objects, conditions and other people to the point in which we lose ourselves.
In this episode of ‘ask dorothy’ I share a real-life client story (and a little of my own) that speaks to the beautiful nature of the human spirit when we can offer kindness and care to others in the words we speak, in sharing of our chainsaws to help clean up fallen trees and other examples of the actions that convey our oneness.
In this episode, we see how my client Olivia* chose to face the negativity and criticism among some of her colleagues with a teaching of impermanence and connection, and by practicing the presence of 'oneness'.

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) has been effective in helping people manage their emotionally overwhelming emotions while stabilizing their lives and relationships.
The research indicates that DBT has been effective with anxiety, depression, shame, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse relapse prevention, anger and aggression, interpersonal problems and other difficulties. The treatment has been adapted and extended for use with couples an adolescents.
Here I share an overview of the four main skills taught in dialectical behavior therapy with examples of each and then we take a closer look at Wise Mind ~ one of four basic Mindfulness Skills.

When you think of personal best ~ are you remembering that it is your best and no one else’s ?
Are you remembering that personal best requires an elevation in your consciousness that is the true catalyst for all that you may achieve?
Because knowledge begins with the embracing of our power and potential to rise above everything we have every known. And as many of you know, change and transformation begin first in the mind and in the heart.
When you include the larger portrait of what deems wholeness, then personal best is the mindset you hold and how you shift your mindset when you feel less positive.
Personal best is the thoughts that become the beliefs you hold and how your thoughts and perceptions determine the kind of person you choose to be as well as how you feel about yourself and the consistent mood state that you deliberately live.

These core attributes ~ integrity, truthfulness and self-honesty determine whether happiness is natural and instinctive – because when you have you have the formula for living a happy life ~ you can ensure that you can be happy as a choice.
Definitions
~ Integrity ~
~ the quality of being honesty and having strong moral principles, moral uprightness
~ a state of being whole
~ Self-Honesty ~
~ not telling lies
~ free of deceit and untruthfulness, sincere
~ trustworthy, morally correct, not false or misleading, genuine, virtuous
~ Truthfulness ~
~ actively making known to all the full truth of a matter
~ expressing the truth, accuracy, realism, being straightforward
All three are what allow you to establish trustworthiness, self-honor and dignity (self-confidence and self-esteem.)

~ For you to heal ( with ) self-love ~ it must be embraced without a critical mind and rather in the complete nature of what love truly is. ~

Ego cannot exist in an environment of self-honesty. In the absence of ego you are forced to look at yourself and to see yourself with honesty rather than defensiveness, ignorance and unwillingness. And it is a choice.
To live out of your ego is to hold yourself back from the potential that you are and this includes the willingness to see yourself accurately, truthfully, wholly ~ so that you can do what is needed to define your path towards truly living your greatness and not defending mediocrity.
In this episode, I also share a short list to help you gain greater awareness of your ego behaviour and what to do about it.

Dhyana is a term used for the seventh limb in the eight-step Yoga practice of the Yoga Sutras.
In Dhyana you become absorbed in the connection that you form with the object of meditation. Another way to explain Dhyana is 'the state of mind that requires deep mental thinking or concentration.'
The first four limbs (or paths) of the Yoga Sutras center on the purification of body and mind. In the pratyahara stage, the mind becomes completely free from the interference of external objects caused by the senses.
After the fifth limb of pratyahara, the mind will be ready to experience a higher state ~ Dharana (concentration) and Dhyana (meditation).
The larger purpose of achieving Dhyana is to take another step towards Samadhi, or complete identification with the Divine, the Universe, or however you like to imagine something that which is far greater than yourself.

In this experiential episode, I share three of my favourite (and most simple) daily practices of Dharana.
Dharana is the sustained practice of focused concentration on a single object. This focus is usually the breath, but it can also be the repetition of a mantra, the visualization of a deity, or the contemplation of a deep truth.
When we practice Dharana, the mind becomes peaceful and it softens or stills. We strengthen the mind by focusing on one area and practicing control of the mind. The mind is like a muscle we can train, and it's not beyond our control that the thoughts just come and take us away with them. We are in control, and Dharana is one way we can practice this control.
