Waiting to Exhale ~ PRANAYAMA

'ask dorothy' | Q & A

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 64

Pranayama breathing guides us into the ease of pure existence.  ~

💜

Do you ever catch yourself holding your breath?  Perhaps in anticipation, in anxiety, in the realization that something is not going as you had hoped?

Maybe your hold your breath when you think about what magic lives in store for you and your future - like when you daydream and wish and manifest your heartfelt desires?

Pranayama is a Sanskrit word formed by two words. Prana means a subtle life-force / ‘vital energy’ / ‘breath of life’ which gives energy to the mind and body (it is also translated as the substance of the astral world) and ayama which signifies the voluntary effort to expand, lengthen and direct life-force or prana.

Pranayama, therefore, means “extension of life force.”

Waiting to exhale is the other side of waiting to enjoy life’s precious moments because you are focused in the end goal rather than the entire journey and what more you seek and learn from the total sum of your experiences.

The lessons are the magic. They are the ways in which life avails to us the importance of our path ~ of the miracles that continue ceaselessly all around us and in all moments and with our conviction.

What are you waiting for?

What are you wishing to change or have or be that seems far reaching and yet perfect for you to discover and experience now? The perfect basis of your beautiful nature lives inside of you. To seek and know it is the essence of life in its truest form.

Sending you great 💜 love...

Sharing the wisdom and beauty of divine love with you...

Namaste!

love, dorothy

The Dangers of Self-Sacrifice | Q and A

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 32

~ Here I answer the questions:

'What is Self-Sacrifice?' and 'How do I know if I am doing this?' ~

💜

The definition of self-sacrifice is not holding belief in yourself; in allowing others to direct your life, in needing false approval and permission from others rather than following through on your own ideals and what matters most to you ~ and of standing tall and in the full authority of knowing that you are more than good enough, accomplished, and successful as you are.

At anytime if you make decisions that impede your life, if there is damage that you cause to yourself because of action or inaction that is unkind, unrelenting, self-critical and self-effacing you are creating damage and suffering.

anatomyofanepisode-400x43.png

Self-sacrifice carries many forms. It is complex and at times complicated because there can be a fine line between doing for others out of love and loving them completely and action that is driven by fear and impressed upon by ego ~ fear of losing someone’s love, fear of judgment by another, fear of negative consequences, fear of recrimination, the ego’s need for power, praise, authority, and self-righteousness.

Anytime that you act out of fear or ego rather than pure love, you risk sacrificing yourself ~ your happiness, your needs and your highest level ideals because your intentions and actions are misaligned ~ they are not pure nor authentic nor honourable.

It is dishonouring yourself and your morals and values in a way that causes you to feel diminished and less than whether in return for something that feeds your ego or offers a false sense of respect, power, comfort, and privilege.

Each Tuesday at 8pm EST, I take you on a journey - inside - what happens in a session of Life Coaching and Therapy in the 'ask dorothy' series as we answer the questions that honour your path and your life.

If you have been struggling with a lack of self-respect, if you continue to self-sabotage thinking it is the answer to feeling loved or cared for, please let me help you live your truth.

Self-sacrifice is not a solution. Self-sacrifice is a lack of self-respect.

Let me help you rebuild the honour and dignity that you deserve. Sending you great love.  namaste! 🙏

For this episode, I have curated a formula to release you from self-sabotage and self-sacrifice.  Find the PDF here:  The Formula for Freedom from Self-Sacrifice

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 62

a state of calm and peace from within ~

💜

The hardest thing for most of us is to be still. To hold a posture of stillness long enough that we feel its effects. The mind is a powerful tool that seems to have a life of its own.

We have, competing for our attention, all of the stimuli we consume. Think about all of the social media content ~ the background noise of our constant devotion to our devices, to TV, music, radio that exists as 'white noise’ and certainly of the bombardment of messages that we give and receive that make it difficult to hear the inner wisdom that lives deep within us.

In a recent episode, we explored together the third limb of the yoga sutras – asana. It is a word that you may be familiar with in yoga as the physical poses that comprise the class experience.

The Sanskrit word ‘asana’ is derived from the root word aasa which means to sit ~ specifically the seat you take for meditation.

Originally, there was only one asana–a stable and comfortable pose for prolonged seated meditation.

Asana is more deeply recognized as a state of being between mind and body that can be cultivated as an experience ~ as a preferential choice ~ as mastery in mind and body.

The seat of meditation is a metaphor for sitting in the practice of ~ for being of the present moment. Bring this into everything that you do ~ your posture, your position, your mindset, your courage, your feelings, and all of the moments of your life.

Feel, experience, witness the promise of the present moment. Lean in.

Let the magic you witness here be the metaphor. Find this truth in all that you do and in all that you are.

Your Epic Summer Bucket List!

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 60

Your epic summer awaits... ~

💜

This episode is dedicated to my client Kenzie and every teenager who is excitedly planning and dreaming about what will be their epic summer!

As we embark on a new month it’s time for both the thrill and the ease of summer. We’ve earned it. It’s been difficult and challenging to live through a pandemic and as we are in many parts of the world, not yet feeling the certain grounding of life, I hope that we have all learned this important teaching: to be grateful in the simple luxuries we have always had and the ability to live ~ to return to this and something even better.

This summer and after more than two years of living without the freedoms we have all most notably taken for granted; freedom that I hope you will appreciate and not forget – this is your summer to soar – to move in the world with love, and to embrace the idea of limitless possibility.

In this episode of ‘ask dorothy’ I share with you the first annual summer epic bucket list that happens to be the brainchild of my client Kenzie who graciously said ‘Yes!’ to allowing me to use her first name and to share much of her list ~ to which I couldn’t help but think that at 15, not only is she wise beyond her years for the items that she has chosen on her list, but also most of these items are what you and I would benefit from and enjoy as well.

Kenzie asked me spontaneously during one of our recent sessions if she could share some of her summer bucket list. We then set out to add a few more items and what I loved was her impromptu explaining of why these were important to her.

Perhaps you too will contemplate why the items on your summer bucket list are meaningful to you. When we name the reasons for why something is important to us, it becomes even more special and we are more likely to seek that out.

As I share some of Kenzie’s list here, let it inspire you to create your own epic summer bucket list. Enjoy where your ideals and wish-filled desires lead you – beyond adventure, beyond self-awareness and autonomy and into what magic is in store for you as you reach beyond the typical and as you embrace every moment of summer!

Sending you great 💜 love...

Sharing the wisdom and beauty of divine love with you...

Faith in the Divine

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 58

Do you believe? Do you trust that your situation, what challenges you face, and your deepest wishes will all have a way of working in support of you? ~

💜

To heal the fear, to uncover the faith, you must surrender the ego mind.

When you hold yourself in the spirit of grace – when you hold yourself in the willingness of power – all love and comfort is yours.

You do not need to find peace, you become peace. Yours is the most gracious path into all things remarkable and full of love. It is truly what we are given each time we surrender, we let go of the noise of the critical mind as we settle into the inner peace that we hold within.

Grace eases us into faith and our focus may then be towards our greatest ideals. You surrender the worry, the doubt, the fear and you embrace the truth and the freedom that you hold to see this – to live this in all of the moments of your life.

A practical means for releasing, surrendering the noise of the ego is to remember the question I teach my clients: ‘What is true?’

What is factual? What is the correct information and ‘right’ knowledge? What is absolute and certain. Everything else is not needed because as you will open your heart, it will lead you to what is most important, most cherished, and the faith calling you to be and do and experience what becomes a ‘right’ path towards all that you seek.

Sending you great 💜 love...

Self-Study IS Liberation

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 56

~ "gnōthi seauton" ~ Know Thyself ~

💜

In this episode of ‘ask dorothy’ I answer the question: What are the characteristics and traits of those who self-actualize and who live in liberation and the freedom to be all that they can and more?

If you are here and listening, this is for you.

We live in a society and a world in which we are taught to look outside of our self for answers, for authority, for validation, for friendship, for community; for the ideals that we are taught to strive for and the timeline for accomplishing what is deemed acceptable.

Nowhere is our heart more certain than when we have found another who loves and adores us.

The gaze is always external. Even when we are asked to know ourselves, we still compare what we see with what we perceive to be the inspired ideal.

Self-actualization can be misrepresented. We may have an idea and an image of what it means to experience a state of being in which we have arrived. We are here. We are complete.

Self-actualized people have an acceptance of who they are, including what I call ‘the ego mind’ ~ the human construct that at times pulls us in to the limited ways in which we think and act and which create our suffering.

When you are self-actualized you experience a drive to be creative in all aspects of your life. This is in fact how you thrive.

Sending you great 💜 love...

Self-Discipline is What Makes You Successful

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 54

~ The discipline supports the benefit. ~

💜

If you want to live more disciplined, if you want to take self-discipline to the highest level to live this easily and to allow it to work for you in creating a life even more successful and satisfying, this episode is for you.

Discipline is a teachable subject. We learn it first as it is modelled by our family of origin and we learn as we seek to be and become more.

Discipline is tenacity. It is strength. It is willingness to take the steps that manifest your goals and dreams. Self-discipline is what drives and also inspires the work that you do and what action becomes habit, routine, normalcy as a way of life.

In this episode of 'ask dorothy' meet my client Gavin who initially blamed his poor choices and his overall unhappiness on his girlfriend and others before the reality check of criminal charges and being on the verge of academic expulsion stirred within him - the fire of 'tapas' and the self-discipline he needed to turn his life around.

* The name of my client has been changed to protect his privacy.  His story is real.

Fall In Love With Your Life

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 52

~ Live with the perception that everything is (as I remind clients) ~ 'perfect as it is’.

This is 'Santosha' or contentment. ~

💜

In this episode of 'ask dorothy' I ask you the questions.  They are questions intended to provoke self-introspection, self-realization and a new dialogue for who you want to be.

What can you hold your heart open to? What can you live in full appreciation and contentment of – here and now?

To say the words to yourself ‘I AM content’ in any moment ~ becomes a visceral and definite reminder of a state of being that you choose deliberately. As you truly align with your words, you are already that much closer to happiness and joy.

We choose contentment because we are present with the experiences of each moment without judging them right or wrong, good or bad.

Something important about the teaching of santosha ~ it calls upon us to acquire the skill of abiding calm – an unshakable centre that exists when you realize that there is nothing missing in each moment. There is nothing missing in your life.

There is also space for you to create whatever you wish for and then to take the steps that will bring what is wanted to you.

If you live with the perception that everything is (as I remind clients) ‘perfect as it is’ – this is the practice of santosha – to allow life to reveal itself to you in each moment without you needing to control or seek or grasp something different. This is the path and the joy of living content.

I remind clients of this who become mired in their focus upon what is wrong with their lives or who require certain circumstances in order to feel content.

For example, they will be happy once their son graduates from high school because right now he is behind one full semester, or they will be happy when their divorce is complete because it has been dragging for several months and draining their energy, or happy when they lose the weight they have gained and lost and gained again because they continue to self-soothe through eating.

If you remove yourself from the opportunity and the experience of contentment because you are not where you want or need to be ~ it is no different then when I decided I wouldn’t enjoy cycling because of the effort of hills to climb without contemplating how one can be content in the moment of the climb.

We climb hills every day metaphorically ~ challenges before us, tasks and responsibilities that need our attention and effort.

If you choose to approach your life content, it will lead you into authentic happiness and it will invite you to experience more of life’s wonder and beauty and it will allow you to be content even if you feel discouraged, frustrated, lonely, or sad.

The Discipline of Purity

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 50

What are the ways in which you can seek to live with a pure heart? ~

💜

Patterns of thinking, beliefs, assumptions, and the daily habits of the mind and body that keep us far removed from the precious experiences of our life and the way in which life reveals how perfect each moment truly is and how we can witness this purity with an open heart.

In Sunday’s episode of the podcast we began the journey ~ the first of a series of 5 into the Niyamas.

Niyamas are the second limb or path of the yoga sutras and are the Sanskrit word for observances.

These ancient wisdom teachings impress upon us the gifts of living the sacred possibilities of life ever abundant ~ unfolding in perfect ways and of our inner dwelling appreciation of the relationship we hold with ourselves and to which we seek to live as spirit in action.

In this episode of ‘ask dorothy’, we examine how life can be sacred, how it can feel special and hopeful ~ and how you can live your daily habits and routines as the most beautiful moments ~ enjoyed purely.

In this Q & A episode I ask you the questions that help embrace what has been missing; what has kept you far removed from seeing the pureness and beauty of life ~ in the simple pleasures and in the richness of living each moment present to the fullest.

Sending you great 💜 love...

Sharing the wisdom and beauty of divine love with you...

The Teaching of Impermanence

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 48

“This too shall pass.”  ~

💜

In this episode of ‘ask dorothy’ I share a real-life client story (and a little of my own) that speaks to the beautiful nature of the human spirit when we can offer kindness and care to others in the words we speak, in sharing of our chainsaws to help clean up fallen trees and other examples of the actions that convey our oneness.

A grand example of both impermanence and oneness is the world covid pandemic and the fact that 77 countries at this very moment are still deeply struggling as case numbers in this week alone have increased, while in other countries we are quickly choosing to forget the discomfort and personal hardships that we have suffered.

Even as we are in different stages of a shared experience, this global phenomenon is one significant reminder of our oneness as humanity in a way that we typically are not able to see.

In this episode, we see how my client Olivia* chose to face the negativity and criticism among some of her colleagues with a teaching of impermanence and connection, and by practicing the presence of 'oneness'.

* All clients names and some details of their story are changed in order to protect their confidentiality.

Life in Exquisite Balance

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 46

Brahmacharya as a moral discipline is how we turn the mind inward and how we balance the senses, leading us to freedom from dependencies and cravings.  ~

💜

How do you live in balance? in harmony? with yourself and with all of life?  Why is balance and harmony the key for feeling complete, full, and whole?

In a culture of excess, can we enjoy and savour the sacredness of singular moments ~ each moment woven into the next and to which becomes the flow of life and all that we know life to be.

In the last several episodes we’ve been exploring the yamas. The word Yama is Sanskrit for ‘restraint’. It is more commonly defined as a moral discipline and moral code that guides us into self-actualization ~ meaning... to attain our psychological needs for personal growth and development throughout our life and to live a life of meaning and purpose.

There are five yamas that are found in the ancient text: ‘The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali’. The Yoga Sutras are akin to a guide or an instruction manual on how to live and to advance along a spiritual path towards enlightenment.

This episode of ‘ask dorothy’ is a Q and A. It is for you to ponder my questions and to hold reflection whether as you include any of these in your journal writing, or simply as constructs in which to open your mind and your heart.

We all live with excess. Think about the means by which you have and acquire more. Does having more of something fulfill you ~ or ~ is fulfillment the appreciation of the experience or object before you ~ and in its fullest capacity?

Brahmacharya is about moderation of the senses. As a moral discipline it is a key practice for managing our sensory cravings.

The secret to live in the balance – to not need the excess – to moderate the indulgences so they are not in control of you, is to enjoy what is right now ~ what you already have, what exists all around you ~ and here in this moment.

This is what is meant to enjoy fully the pleasure of now. It is to witness the precious nature of each moment in its full capacity without the distractions of looking to something more or different.

The Truth Sets You Free

'ask dorothy'

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 42

~ Truth will lead you out of darkness because it is in illuminating ‘what is’ that you then may in the very next moment, find your path again and into the light.  ~

💜

This episode picks up where we left on last in our discussion of the five Yamas – moral disciplines that are recorded in the ancient philosophical texts of the Yoga Sutras and here I dive into some ‘Q and A’ on the topic of truth.

Truthfulness or ‘Satya’ is the second yama or limb of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and this moral vow holds many secrets for how we can free ourselves from our suffering.

There are many ways that truth finds you. As much as some may avoid truth’s yearnings you can never avoid or deny its huge revelations.

I’m going to let you in on a huge secret to what will always bring joy into your life and for what will always reassure you – to live honourably – to feel supported in your decisions – and to always guide you along a right path.

Satya the Sanskrit word for truth is the definitive ground. It is what supports and upholds all of your faithful decisions. It is truth that compels you to seek change and to honour what you stand for and believe in.

Truth is how you create relations and connection and how you show yourself to be trustworthy and reliable. You need to know ‘what is’ true with accuracy and factual information in order to make the right and best decisions.

Truth is not always easy. It is not always what you want to hear or know especially if what is desired is something different. Let me say here that the truth will always be what you need to know.

You can work with truth. You can find your way to your right answers when you have the correct and accurate information.

Making a decision of any importance needs to rest upon knowing the truth.

Sending you great 💜 love...

Sharing the wisdom and beauty of divine love with you...

The Violence That We Cause Others

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 40

Ahimsa is inclusive of not hurting yourself with negative or critical thoughts or actions and not hurting someone else with your thoughts and intentions, nor with actions or words.  ~

💜

In Sunday’s episode we began a five part series and a deep dive into the Yamas –The Yamas are the first limb or path of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and they together with the Niyamas reveal yoga’s ethical guidelines and a foundation to living masterfully.

If you are interested in developing your spiritual wisdom, if you are looking to gain the skills to choose the right attitude and mindset, the right thoughts and actions to live fulfilled and to take ownership of your life, and the right guidance to move effortlessly and with the wisdom that frees you to live both peaceful and full of joy, I invite you to join me for the series on each of the five yamas beginning with that of ahimsa ~ nonviolence.

The first yama – ahimsa – is the Sanskrit word that translates as nonviolence.

Here I share four practices to help you embody a life of non-violence – directed towards yourself, others, and the world.

As I study each of these yamas in support of my own yoga practice and also in continuing to raise my consciousness, I realize how ahimsa is truly the most important of the five yamas as it is the foundation that directs us to live in a way that first teaches us what nonviolence truly means.

You may feel the significance of this auspicious discipline as something that must be top of mind each day. You may be surprised to learn of the many ways that violence is beyond the obvious physical actions that cause harm or suffering.

Here, let me dive deeper into the everyday challenges of life by addressing what precipitates our tendencies toward violence.

Sending you great 💜 love...

Sharing the wisdom and beauty of divine love with you...

Self-Discipline Is Your Superpower | A Real Life Client Story

The WISDOM podcast  Season 3  Episode 38

- Self-discipline is you acting on your greater conscience to do the right thing – for yourself and in any situation. -

💜

I think of self-discipline as a superpower because it is precisely what brings the inertia into the present moment for you to take action. It is what stops the chatter of the mind and overrides the old scripts that you replay with new language, the determination that says quite instinctively, “I can do this” and “I am doing this.”

Self-discipline could be exactly what you are missing and what keeps you from living your life in the way that you deeply desire.

So to ask yourself:How self-disciplined am I?’ Be wholly honest with your answer. and ‘Where in my life do I need to be more self-disciplined and how?’ These make great journal prompts for you to better self-examine the areas of your life that need self-discipline.

Self-discipline is so important that it is the single identifying criteria as to whether you get things done and in a timely manner.

Self-discipline stops the procrastination effect and the relinquishing of responsibility and it is the solution if you’ve ever struggled with unproductive or self-sabotaging habits that limit your potential.

In this episode we take a deep dive into the mechanisms that you need to build self-discipline; including how to up level your self-discipline in a way that supercharges your decisions and the actions you take ~ to support you in all of the best practices that you will live.

And if you are a parent, this episode will be helpful as it reminds you of the importance of setting the right example because your children will see the incongruity between what you say and what you do. Your actions speak louder than your words. Your children will learn the habits that you hold including a lack of self-discipline.

Each Tuesday at 8pm EST, I take you on a journey - inside - what happens in a session of Life Coaching and Therapy in the 'ask dorothy' series as we answer the questions that honour your path and your life.

To help you up level your self-discipline, please let me help you live your truth.
