Do you ever catch yourself holding your breath?  Perhaps in anticipation, in anxiety, in the realization that something is not going as you had hoped?

 

Maybe your hold your breath when you think about what magic lives in store for you and your future - like when you daydream and wish and manifest your heartfelt desires?

 

Pranayama is a Sanskrit word formed by two words. Prana means a subtle life-force / ‘vital energy’ / ‘breath of life’ which gives energy to the mind and body (it is also translated as the substance of the astral world) and ayama which signifies the voluntary effort to expand, lengthen and direct life-force or prana.

Pranayama, therefore, means “extension of life force.”

 

Waiting to exhale is the other side of waiting to enjoy life’s precious moments because you are focused in the end goal rather than the entire journey and what more you seek and learn from the total sum of your experiences.

 

The lessons are the magic. They are the ways in which life avails to us the importance of our path ~ of the miracles that continue ceaselessly all around us and in all moments and with our conviction.

In this episode of ‘ask dorothy’ I answer the question: What are the characteristics and traits of those who self-actualize and who live in liberation and the freedom to be all that they can and more?

 

If you are here and listening, this is for you. 

We live in a society and a world in which we are taught to look outside of our self for answers, for authority, for validation, for friendship, for community; for the ideals that we are taught to strive for and the timeline for accomplishing what is deemed acceptable.

 

Nowhere is our heart more certain than when we have found another who loves and adores us.

 

The gaze is always external. Even when we are asked to know ourselves, we still compare what we see with what we perceive to be the inspired ideal.

 

Self-actualization can be misrepresented. We may have an idea and an image of what it means to experience a state of being in which we have arrived. We are here. We are complete.

 

Self-actualized people have an acceptance of who they are, including what I call ‘the ego mind’ ~ the human construct that at times pulls us in to the limited ways in which we think and act and which create our suffering.

 

When you are self-actualized you experience a drive to be creative in all aspects of your life. This is in fact how you thrive.

Welcome to the third episode in this series on the Niyamas. Niyama is a Sanskrit word that translates as “rules, guidelines, or observances.” Niyamas appear in Hindu and Buddhist texts, and they are best known as the second limb of the eight limbs of yoga, as described in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.

 

These eight steps act as guidelines for how to live a meaningful and purposeful life. They serve as a prescription for moral and ethical conduct and principles; they direct attention toward one’s health; and they help us to acknowledge the spiritual aspects of our nature.

 

The Niyamas are an invitation into a radical exploration of possibility. Just how good can you feel? How joyful can your life be? Can you reveal just how amazing you are?

My hope in sharing each of the five niyamas – is to open you further to the spiritual life that you can live in the physical ~ and the absolute beauty and wonder that you may cultivate readily for yourself.

 

In this episode I cite and also quote directly from Deborah Adele’s book: The Yamas and Niyamas. Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Practice in addition to other sources that I will list in the description. They if you wish to continue your study.

 


Tapas - or self-discipline, austerity, perseverance, burning enthusiasm ~ describes a spirit of ‘fierce grace’.


In Tapas we employ physical and mental conditioning to push against the natural resistance our body and mind present. This resistance is what generates your inner fire.

 

The literal definition of tapas is “heat” – and in this case it is the heat that builds during periods of determined effort. Tapas accompanies any discipline that is willingly and gladly accepted in order to bring about a change of some kind—whether it be improved health, a new habit, better concentration, or a different direction in life.

 

Tapas is a process of burning through untruths, fears, discomfort, pain, and struggle ~ channelling the fire of that experience into self-disciplined actions that fuel your evolution.

Tapas focuses energy, creates fervour, and increases strength and confidence.

For example, the practice of asanas in yoga is a form of tapas for the body; meditation is a tapas that purifies and focuses the mind.

Tapas is the encouragement to tap into your inner fire as what you draw from ~ as discipline to transform yourself into something else.

I think of self-discipline as a superpower because it is precisely what brings the inertia into the present moment for you to take action. It is what stops the chatter of the mind and overrides the old scripts that you replay with new language, the determination that says quite instinctively, “I can do this” and “I am doing this.”

 

Self-discipline could be exactly what you are missing and what keeps you from living your life in the way that you deeply desire.

So to ask yourself:How self-disciplined am I?’ Be wholly honest with your answer. and ‘Where in my life do I need to be more self-disciplined and how?’ These make great journal prompts for you to better self-examine the areas of your life that need self-discipline.

 

Self-discipline is so important that it is the single identifying criteria as to whether you get things done and in a timely manner.

 

Self-discipline stops the procrastination effect and the relinquishing of responsibility and it is the solution if you’ve ever struggled with unproductive or self-sabotaging habits that limit your potential.

 

In this episode we take a deep dive into the mechanisms that you need to build self-discipline; including how to up level your self-discipline in a way that supercharges your decisions and the actions you take ~ to support you in all of the best practices that you will live.

 

And if you are a parent, this episode will be helpful as it reminds you of the importance of setting the right example because your children will see the incongruity between what you say and what you do. Your actions speak louder than your words. Your children will learn the habits that you hold including a lack of self-discipline.

This episode begins with a mantra to help you begin the energetic release of the aspects of you that you no longer wish to be ~ as you reclaim your wholeness with the behaviors, attitude, and beliefs that best represent your highest self.

Here we do some very cool shape-shifting towards living whole and of your authentic self.  

It’s time to break free from what aspects of yourself are inauthentic ~ that is ~ what has never served you.

 

We learn so much from the external world that does not serve who we truly are and all that we desire to be.

 

What traits, behaviours, mindset is not wholly kind and loving is also not authentic.

 

As humans we all experience moments when we are living out of our dark side ~ the inauthentic part of our self, largely ingrained with the ego’s need to be right, to be in competition with or better than another – and the desire to find approval and importance when really you already have everything you need to be monumental in your life ~ and true to your highest good.

 

“Release what you will no longer be – the antithesis of something is something better.”

 

Shedding the inauthentic self is releasing what is not wanted. This is replaced with a return to embracing what you truly are at your core. The new behaviours, mindset, thoughts, and actions all contribute to feeling whole and complete ~ as you are.

 

In releasing the cycles of your past, you are free to live whole ~ and true to yourself ~ all that is built upon what you are ~ that is pure goodness, grace, kindness, love, inspired to create and to thrive, and the ability to appreciate all of life’s beautiful moments in the present.

Your positive sense of self is the means by which you live - awakened to know and appreciate all of the aspects that define you; in the context of how you witness yourself in the world, self-honest and willing to live honourably – to do the right thing – because this is how you experience yourself as a being of love.

 

 

In psychology, sense of self refers to your conceptualization of the collection of characteristics that define you.

 

Personality traits, abilities and skills, your likes and dislikes, your belief system, your morals and values, what motivates you — how you view yourself in relationships and your perception of how others relate to and receive you. These all contribute to self-esteem and your unique identity as a person.

 

There are many natural and organic ways that each one of us develops our sense of self beginning with our early childhood. With the known research in neural plasticity, we have the ability to change our sense of self; to develop a more positive and certainly a healthier sense of who we are.

 

In this episode we discuss what it means to have a healthy and strong sense of self – one that exists because of the relationship you build and nurture with yourself. This is the most important relationship you will ever have. It begins the true awakening of what lies within – what you are beyond the physical and your mind.

 

Sense of self is achieved by developing the means by which you can be comfortable and content in your own company and to enjoy the companionship of your self.

If you are listening because you have recently gone through a life change that was or was not decided by you; it can easily be overwhelming. It can cause you to question your life and what choices you have made and whether you need to rethink everything.

 

Change is being imposed upon us all of the time.  Our lives become more abundant through the change sought through desire, growth, opportunity, new thoughts, and actions.  Some change when we label it as: bad, unjust, wrong, only makes it more difficult to accept and navigate as a life experience that is causing us to break open; to think and feel and live beyond what we have - until now.

Therein is the snow globe effect - our world as we know it – shaken upside down for a time; not forever.  Then as we watch in anticipation and wonder, we see the snow fall; filling all of the space inside the snow globe, delighting us in the magic of what we are witness to; creating a beautiful scene with nothing more than the simple action of movement; of changing the form of what already is -to reveal so much beauty.

 

In this episode I share the story of my clients Harold and Delia; and how heartfelt desire and self-honesty is necessary for the change that becomes our personal transformation.  Join me!

If you ever wanted to feel more self-confident and deserving of your successes and to own what I call your 'greatness', then this episode is going to be the strategy that you need.  If you want to feel the confidence of knowing that your decisions are the right and best ones for you; and to have greater confidence in all that you do, then the 3 best practices that I am about to share, are going to make it easy for you build greater confidence and to live empowered because of what you think and believe about yourself.

In this episode we dive into what makes a person confident, and how you can grow your confidence to extreme levels by choice; because confidence grows with your affirmative words of yourself.  Changing the inner landscape of your thoughts to empower rather than diminish your abilities, grows confidence exponentially.  Your inner dialogue then becomes the sacred and empowering messaging that you live by. 

In other words, you are more careful about what you tell yourself and believe because you experience directly the effects of your words felt throughout your being.  This enables you to follow a path that is inspiring; and true to who you are.  As you develop a daily practice using these 3 strategies, you begin to feel encouraged by your words and as you take the steps towards completing what is most meaningful to you; and which nourishes your inner being.  These three practices are incredibly simple, your results are directly correlated to making them a daily habit; as you re-train your mind unto what is true and what you will believe of yourself to be possible.

 

Confidence is a person's belief that a chosen course of action is the right choice and that they can properly perform that action.  As a personality trait, confidence is sometimes referred to as self-confidence. How do you define confidence?  What does it mean to you?

To become more of something, you must first know what more will be.  What are the ways in which you want to be more confident?

So at some point during or at the end of this podcast, I'd love for you to make a few notes; deciding the ways in which you wish to be more confident.  Then, use the strategies here in these best practices to help mobilize yourself towards building a more confident you as a personality trait and as belief in your ability to make the right choices for yourself and to be successful in your actions.

For example, maybe you want to be more confident in your interactions with others and how you speak and carry a conversation.  Or perhaps you want to be more confident in the way that you parent, or in how you are at work with co-workers and your boss.  Perhaps you want to be better at owning your successes and feeling greater confidence in your decision making along a path that will be right and best for you.  When you identify the areas in which you want to have more confidence, then you can begin towards this taking the specific action steps that you need to accomplish this.

Many people want to have greater self-confidence but they haven't clearly defined the areas in which they want this.

 

 

To build confidence, use these 3 simple and yet overlooked successful practices:  

1.  The first practice of self-confidence is the importance of mindfulness of what you say to yourself at all times.  What you tell yourself, you believe.  Be far more attentive and discerning to your inner dialogue. This may be shocking at times when you realize what you have been telling yourself that causes self-doubt, insecurity, and fear.  2. Choose deliberately the words that you speak both inwardly and aloud (and what images you hold in your mind).  Begin to define the beliefs that you want to hold regardless of whether you believe in them fully yet.  Confidence grows with encouragement and kindness.  You must be willing to see your goodness, and to acknowledge what makes you uniquely different, special, and talented.  (Sometimes this may be precisely what we have been teased or judged harshly for).  How you are different from others is often a strength.  You can best develop your strengths and confidence by curating a list that highlights the ways in which you are capable; what you see as your positive traits and abilities; and how you are resilient.  Remind yourself of this using phrases and keywords that you repeat often.  For example, "I am innately wise."  "I am a talented _________ (and fill in the blank here) (e.g. writer/musician/performer/artist/speaker)."  "I am defining my success and living it fully." "I have an important purpose in the world that I am living now."  Your written list and how you remind yourself of your talents and abilities is how you re-train your mind to hold belief in yourself and to grow your confidence and worth. *'I AM' and 'I HAVE' statements reflect manifesting this in the here and now.  They bring all of what you want into the present moment for you to witness each time that you reinforce this with your words spoken quietly and aloud. It goes without saying that you must have fun with this process. Your positive feelings of yourself  will grow your confidence.  3. The third practice of self-confidence is this: confidence grows when you take action; when you challenge yourself in new situations, and as you learn and improve.  Your encouraging words spoken inward and aloud remind you of your strengths and positive traits is how you feel encouraged to try new things, to better yourself further and to take more positive action which in turn builds confidence and competency.  When you challenge yourself to grow and become better through positive action, you grow confidence and belief in yourself.

These 3 practices also require your ongoing effort as you are teaching yourself how to think differently from what has likely been a well ingrained habit of critical and negative self-talk over a lengthy period of time.  It will be helpful if you can enjoy as you grow belief in yourself and as you nurture esteem and worth.

You grow confidence each time you acknowledge your greatness.  Acknowledging your greatness is reminding yourself - remembering - how incredible you are.  We all have unique gifts and talents that simply need our attention, and our willingness to use these to become even more skilled at them.  This is an important part of what we are here to do in this life; to enjoy the journey of expressing and using our innate talents and gifts in a way in which we enjoy and feel inspired by.  This is what is meant by finding and living your life's purpose.  To remind yourself of all that you are good at and enjoy is helpful to mobilize you towards this and to live it.  You grow self-confidence each time that you recognize your innate talents and abilities and what effort you have made in becoming better at this.

 

 

You must make it a regular practice to acknowledge the positive aspects of yourself.  This is how you feel encouraged and supported in who you already are

Acknowledging the positive relentlessly grows confidence and your belief in your abilities and in making the right decisions.

There are no hidden secrets to growing confidence; just the mindful and regular attention that you give to what you tell yourself and what you are willing to believe.  Remember that the words you speak inside your mind are going to determine how you feel and what choices you will make; including any inaction that comes from your lack of belief in yourself.  Kind words and encouragement that become your daily mantra will result in positive feelings and behaviours; and the belief in your ability and worth.  This encourages you to continue taking positive steps towards all that you desire; to believe endlessly in your potential and the having of what you want, and to never give up.

 

In addition to this list of 3 best practices, here are a few additional strategies and tips for increasing your positive feelings of yourself and becoming more confident.

  • Similar to thinking about what you are grateful of, which helps immensely to change your mood state, to boost your positive feelings and to feel encouraged; write and keep an ongoing list of what allows you to feel good (and even great) about yourself.  This is a powerful way to grow self confidence quickly.  This is something that you can do daily; that you can practice deliberately to feel encouraged, and in moments when you need to be reminded of your immense ability for accomplishing all that you deem to be most important and set your mind to.
  • Seek to know yourself and to live your truth.  This means paying attention to what is right for you; of practising moving in the direction of what makes you happiest.  This is using happiness and joy as your inner GPS that guides you in your life towards these ideals and goals that are what inspires you.  This is important since the more you develop your knowledge of who you are; the more confident you are in exuding your presence, your self-knowledge and in your accurate decision making.  Begin to speak aloud your truth (practice being wholly honest with yourself and others) about what you think and believe in and what is right and best for you.  As you practice voicing your truth it will reinforce that you know yourself best and it will help you to be accountable to what is right for you.  We all deserve and can have a high level of confidence - confidence is not ego - but rather it is the positive feelings that come with believing in your self and your abilities.  Being self-encouraging and kind will empower you to try new experiences, and to make changes of yourself and how you approach and live life that will support and grow your confidence.  This happens as you acknowledge and remind yourself of your value, your worthiness and that you are more than capable of whatever you choose to do.

As a challenge, if you would like more practice in being a more confident version of yourself, you can make a pact to become the very best version of who you are.  Set out to change one thing about yourself that you have been wanting to improve.  Let yourself gather what information you need to make this change.  Seek out what professional help, books, courses, and any other support that will allow you to be successful at this.  The happier you are with who you are, and how you are choosing to be, the more your confidence grows.  Choose something to change that you feel inspired by.  As you begin to make changes to one aspect of your life, you will likely notice other desired changes being easier to make.

When we recognize aspects of our personality, our behaviours, or our thoughts and beliefs that are no longer serving us, and if we do not take the steps towards changing this, then we will continue to feel less confident in these areas.  Make an effort to change even if the change you want takes time; doing so will be so rewarding and it will boost your confidence in your ability to make other changes.  Make it a priority to become the very best version of you; and to begin this now.
